Backpack

Normally we classify backpacks into three kinds: external-frame packs, internal-frame packs and daypacks (less than 2500 cubic inches). For a trip of 2-3 days, we recommend 3,000 to 5,000 cubic inches backpack and for a 6-days trekking, you may need a 5,000+ cubic inches one.

Internal-frame packs utilize a close-fitting, flexible design that makes them a great choice for off-trail adventures. As the Internal-frame packs are narrower than the external-frame packs, in most cases it will help the backpacker move more swiftly during the climbing, skiing, scrambling or navigating uneven terrain.

Sleeping bag

One of the four basic outdoor gear, sleeping bag performs as a blanket where you can refresh yourself from the tiring trip.

Comfort temperature: Make sure about the temperature at night of your destination. Select a 20 degree sleeping bag for your 3-Season experience, Zero (0) degree rating for cold weather/winter experience and minus 15-30 degrees for a winter experience.

Insulation: Synthetic has recently approached most of the features down has, but they have one distinct advantage. They don't absorb moisture and so they don't lose the insulation factor when down becomes wet. Synthetic-filled bags cost less and are great for people who are allergic to down. For backpackers, synthetic bags weigh a little more and usually take up more space in your pack.

Shape: There are a few shapes to consider - Mummy, Rectangular, Semi-Rectangular. Mummy bags are the warmest, but they are the most confining sleeping bag. The mummy bag also has a hood to enclose your head. Rectangular are a lot roomier and more comfortable. Two rectangular bags can also be zippered together to form a larger sleeping back for 2 people. Semi-Rectangular sleeping bags are warmer than the Rectangular and have more room than the Mummy sleeping bag. So it is a compromise between the 3 bags. There are also extra long sizes for people that are taller.

Tent

In the tent, you sleep, cook just like at home. A high-performance right tent will protect you from heavy rain, bugs and even storms on the mountain.

There are 4 basic components to a tent: the poles, the body of the tent, the rain fly and a tarp (ground cloth or footprint to extend the life of a tent's floor - optional).

Then you should decide: 3-season tent or 4-season tent?

3-Season Tent has 3 poles, a rain fly that does not allow ventilation and also protects from the weather, sometimes has a vestibule and sometimes has a skylight window for extra light. The tents are intended for spring, summer and fall. They perform well in wind and rain, though their designs are not suited to handle significant snow loads. If you're a recreational traveler and do the bulk of your camping between May and September, choose a 3-season tent.

4-Season Tent has 4 poles, skylight for extra lighting, a removable vestibule and usually mesh with zipper windows. They are built for prolonged exposure to severe winter conditions: high winds, heavy snow falls, cold temperatures, intense UV exposure, etc. Pick a tent equipped to withstand the harshest conditions you might encounter.

Think about how many people will be sleeping in the tent. You can find 1 person, 2 person or larger tent in our store. Just check the room with the sleeping mattress in. If you are tall and large, maybe chooses a 3 person tent for only 2 people?

Sleeping Mattress

Sleeping mattress is just like your bed in open field, making you comfortable as well as functioning as insulation from the cold and moisture ground. The most common mattresses on the market are foam mattress and self-inflating mattress.

Self-inflating pads- open-cell foam pads wrapped in air-tight, waterproof nylon shells. These are very comfortable, insulating and adjustable while more expensive and heavier than foam pads.

Foam pads- open-cell foam pads and closed-cell foam pads. Both or they are more effective insulators than air mattresses. Another point lies in their price, much lower than air ones. Negatives maybe the space it will take as it is not compressive.

Stoves

A bowl of hot soup added with a cup of hot coffee contributes a lot to revive your energy and spirit in chilly and stormy campsite.

The most common stoves on the market are gas stoves and fuel stoves.

Find room in your budget to find a reliable stove, your life may rely on it.

The gas stoves own the positives of ease of use (strike a match, turn knob and presto, done), ease of carry (smaller and lighter than the fuel stoves), on the other hand, they are not reusable (cause a lot of waste) and burn relatively shorter (2-3 hours continuously burning).

The fuel stoves can be refilled, more effective on higher attitude and burn hotter. In those remote areas it will be easier to find the fuel, gasoline, alcohol or any liquid fuel. However, they are of bigger volume and tend to be more expensive to buy it. You may be required to clean them frequently if you’ve used other unleaded fuel. Tips: Adding wind screens and suitable cook set with your stove will help you a lot.

Lighting

A portable light source should be kept in your backpack for safety’s and comfort’s sake. You will never regret it! Choose from flashlight, camp light and headlamp to meet your demand.

Headlamps - Battery-powered headlamps work like traditional flashlights, but they let you keep both hands free to tackle the task at hand. This can be a great bonus when you're trying to set up your tent, cook dinner or fix a stuck zipper in the dark. Modern headlamps have come a long ways since the miner-style hardhats of yesterday. The smallest can weigh as little as two ounces—with batteries! And advanced lighting technology, such as LED and Xenon halogen, offers light sources that are adjustable, longer-lasting and offer a more even source of illumination.

Hydration System

Water is vital to everyone. The loss of water may affect your performance; even cause the danger of life. A recommended guideline is to drink about 1 liter of water for every hour of exercise.
Either a water bottle or a secure hydration system will be necessary according to your comfort level for your activities. You will need a securer hydration system for a less stable activity, for example, trail running or rock climbing.

Water bottle
You can choose from a single big bottle in your backpack and multiple small bottles in a hip pack around your waist for running. There are insulated water bottles that water can be kept warm or cool for the whole day.

Hydration packs
Hydration packs come in multiple sizes and allow you to drink water while you are on the go. A long tube is attached to a bladder with a bite valve to allow you to drink water. The bladders, when empty, take up very little amount of space. The hydration pack can accommodate interchangeable, sized bladders for different types of your activities. There are different types of openings on the bladders: wide fill-mouths and zippered bladders. The hydration pack keeps your liquids either hot or cold.

Size, shape & comfort
Choose your size and shape carefully base on your type of activity. Comfort is the key to every hydration pack. If the hydration pack is not comfortable, it is not the pack for you. Try on as many hydration packs as necessary.

Trekking poles

Benefits of using trekking poles:
They offer you extra stability, especially on uneven terrains
They help to spread load and shock on your leg
They lead to better use of energy as you are more likely to find a walking rhythm.

What you need to know?
Two sticks are better than one on the trail. Using a pair of hiking poles or trekking poles gives you balance and takes more stress off the lower body joints.

Grip:
The most common ones are rubber, cork, plastic and foam material. Plastic grip is the least expensive but least effective as it tends to slip when your hands sweat. Rubber is durable and grapy but a bit heavier. Foam material is the most comfortable one among them, while it is not as tougher as rubber.

Angle of Grip:
Most of trekking poles on the market is straight. You might also notice some with an angel of about 15 degrees, which is of a higher price. This design will relax you waist better as your hands put in a natural position.

Anti-shock system:
This will increase comfort when you use the stick. But make sure choosing one with tuning-on-and-off device.

Tips and baskets:
Normally, there are 2 kinds of baskets, the larger one for snow terrain and the smaller one for dirt and rock.
You can also add one rubber basket to the original one for walking on pavement. Make sure the tip and basket both changeable.
